About
“Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles.”
Frank Lloyd Wright
Loose Land is a monthly newsletter that provides a rundown of upcoming cultural activities throughout Los Angeles. (Because we needed something like that, and figured you might, too.)
Once upon a time (no wind-up, no pitch!) a loose network of newspapers and analog social networks (blech!) helped people find the exciting nouns about town. And then, after the internet had sucked all the money out of media (RIP The Village Voice) and the buzz out of life, we still had the blogs (L.A Taco) and the apps, like 5 Every Day (the greatest!) to fill the void. But in the end, voids are gonna void, people are gonna move on, and now, here we are, living in the age of Google Zero -- and it sucks!
We don’t really know what to do about that – we’ll leave that to the think tanks, who are surely going to launch a think-war on behalf of the think-humans soon – but rather than just complain, we thought we’d also take a small, furtive stab at improving things. And the first step, we figured, is just writing about some stuff that’s happening nearby: arts stuff, culture stuff, family stuff; sports stuff; other stuff… you know: the stuff you used to look for on the internet. Yeah! That stuff!
“TL;DR” (aka “Type Less; Driving Rightnow”): Loose Land is a place where you can find a monthly listing of LA events and happenings, plus ruminations on the people/places/things/vanity plates that annoy/inspire us.
Who We Are
We are Daniel Harmon, Betsy Kalven, and Meredith Rogers. We have certain sets of skills that may or may not be conducive to running a collaborative enterprise focused on ensuring that human beings still have a role in bringing human beings together in the city of Los Angeles. Outside of this work, Daniel writes, edits, and acquires word-things for himself and others, Betsy designs and strategizes for humans, and Meredith does in fact bring humans together for a living. If you have a question or a suggestion, I would recommend you text all of us separately, then email us as a group, and then attempt to reach us via some form of direct messaging, just as you would at your normal job.
We are eager to hear from you in any and all formats (save for Kiss Cams) at any and all times (save for Fridays and Summers).
